Toa Mangai was not actually Lhikan's original team, but it was the Toa team protecting Metru Nui before the Toa Metru. These were the Toa who defended the city against the Kanohi Dragon and later with the help of other Toa against the Dark Hunters.

One wore a Kanohi Kakama, which was found at one of Metru Nui's gateways by the Shadowed One.

The team members come from distant lands and various islands that and came to Metru Nui to fight the Kanohi Dragon. After a month-long battle, they finally defeated it and shipped it to Xia. Sometime after, Tuyet was banished to the Pit for murdering Matoran. Due to Dume later rejected the idea of the Dark Hunters building a base in Metru Nui, the Toa\Dark Hunter War erupted. Although the Toa won, by the end of the war, they lost an ally, Nidhiki, who would soon become a Dark Hunter. Afterwards, they became Metru Nui's defenders. Unfortunately, most were killed by the Dark Hunter "Eliminator" while trying to seal off all Gates to Metru Nui under Turaga Dume (Makuta Teridax in disguise)'s orders. Lhikan was eventually the sole surviving Toa, and he would sacrifice his Toa energies to bring about a new generation of Toa, the Toa Metru.
