Comic 10: The Death of Mata Nui is the tenth comic in the BIONICLE: Ignition series and the fifth in the Sea of Darkness sub-series.
Toa Mahri Hahli and the Barraki Mantax find Hydraxon, who is attempting to destroy the Kanohi Ignika. Hahli sends the Ignika off course by causing a riptide, and making the Cordak missle miss. Hahli and Hydraxon then begin to battle, causing the Cordak blaster to hit the floor beneath them, and knocking them unconscious. Mantax grabs the mask, and swims away with it. (His "curse" is that it takes energy from foes and adds it to his energy.)
The Toa Mahri find Hahli but Hydraxon is gone, obviously looking for Mantax. Matoro tells them the information Maxilos had provided him with, that the Stone Cord linking Voya Nui to Mahri Nui had to be destroyed. So they escort the Matoran of Mahri Nui up the Cord, where Axonn takes all the Matoran to safety underneath Voya Nui's surface.
Axonn gives the Toa a "living vehicle" called the Toa Terrain Crawler, and sends them down in time for battle.Upon arrival, They spot Mantax, and form teams to fight. Jaller Mahri goes with Matoro to retrieve the Mask of Life, while Hewkii Mahri stays behind to fight the enlarged Gadunka, who is defeated quickly.
Toa Jaller fights Mantax, and beats him by severely blasting him with Fire. Jaller goes to retrieve the mask when Hydraxon interferes. Matoro spots Maxilos going toward Jaller, and freezes him, saying that "a thousand years of darkness is finally over, even if I freeze you for all time to do it."
Jaller shoots a flaming jet at Hydraxon, but missing, he helps Teridax/Maxilos free himself instead.
Spinax attacks Hydraxon, and Maxilos and Hydraxon begin to battle. Matoro grabs the Kanohi Ignika, earning himself a question from Jaller, about what was with Maxilos, or more importantly, why he isn't chasing them. Makuta's answer is "I have my reasons, little Toa. I do indeed."
The Toa Mahri regroup, and all six of them fire on the Cord, sending Voya Nui crashing underwater. It collides with Mahri Nui on the way, destroying the underwater city. Matoro feels the Ignika being pulled in the wake of Voya Nui, and is determined to get there, even as all of the six Barraki return.
Matoro swims faster than ever, but realizes he is too late. The world turns cold, and Matoro proclaims the Great Spirit Mata Nui has died.
