The Chronicler was an esteemed position of visiting and recording major events in Matoran society, and The Bionicle as a whole. He or she was also to follow the deeds of Toa. The Chronicler often carried the Chronicler's Staff for carving.

The first known Chronicler was Kodan, the Chronicler of Metru Nui till shortly before the Great Cataclysm. He supposedly went on a mission with a Toa to close the gates of Metru Nui sent by the false Turaga Dume, and never returned. Most likely he and the Toa were killed by "Eliminator".
There were no new Chroniclers until the Toa Metru moved the Matoran of Metru Nui to Mata Nui. At some point during the following millennium, Takua was elected the next Chronicler. He gathered six Toa stones made by the Toa Metru and used them to summon the Toa Mata. He promptly took a bad fall and lost his memory. He then traveled the island and eventually held off the infected Rahi attacking the Kini-Nui with the other members of the Chronicler's Company for the Toa Mata in Mangaia. Eventually, when he became Takanuva, a new Chronicler had to be named.
Hahli, who had recently gone on an adventure herself at the time of Takua's transformation, was eventually decided on by Turaga Nokama. This was a job that did not last long, as she became a Toa Inika around a month later.
Kopeke was later elected the next Chronicler after the Toa Inika had gone to the Pit in pursuit of the Mask of Life.

- Kopeke was decided on as the new Chronicler on BZPower, in a poll hosted by Greg Farshtey. His position as Chronicler was mentioned in BIONICLE Legends 8: Downfall.
